UI Research Grants Programs
UI Research Center is announcing its 2013 Research Grants Programs (UI Research Grants for New Scholars and UI Research Grants for Doctoral Students). Grants will be awarded directly to the selected recipients at the opening ceremony of the 1st UI International Research Conference on June 28, 2013.
Purpose
UI Research Center supports research aimed at using advanced and cutting-edge research methodology and conducting original investigations on new and untested ideas in the areas of language and communication, leadership and policy, education and culture, and TESOL and learning.
Language research includes but not limited to L1 and L2 learning, teaching, and assessment; second language acquisition; TESOL; English linguistics; applied linguistics; and sociolinguistics.
Communication research includes but not limited to communication and culture; social interaction; communication technology; global communication; strategic communication; cultural studies; interpersonal communication; and intercultural communication.
Leadership research includes but not limited to: Organizational theory; organizational behavior; organization and society; strategic leadership; human resource management; international management; educational leadership and management.
Policy research includes but not limited to: Social policy; educational policy; public policy; politics and policy; policy theory; policy process; policy analysis and evaluation; and methodological approaches to policy research.
Education research includes but not limited to: Instructional strategies and techniques; educational assessment and evaluation; STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) studies; special education; school counseling and school psychology; international and comparative education; languages and literature; and translation theory and practice.
Culture research includes but not limited to: Communication and culture; cognition and culture; ethnicity and culture; language and culture; popular culture; cultural studies; intercultural communication; and cross-cultural learning.
TESOL research includes but not limited to: ESL/EFL methods; ESL/EFL materials; ESL/EFL learning; ESL/EFL assessment; English for academic purposes (EAP); sheltered instruction; second language acquisition; and applied linguistics.
Learning research includes but not limited to: Student learning and development; learning styles, strategies, and achievement; school learning; constructivism and learning; cross-cultural learning; literacy development; technology-enhanced learning; and impact of tests on learning.

Research Grants
UI Research Center offers two types of research grants: UI Research Grants for New Scholars and UI Research Grants for Doctoral Students.
To be eligible to apply for a UI Research Grant for New Scholars, an applicant must:
- Hold a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.);
- Be a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor at an appropriate educational institution; and
- Have access to institutional resources necessary to conduct the proposed research project.
To be eligible to apply for a UI Research Grant for Doctoral Students, an applicant must:
- Be a second-year of a third-year Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) student;
- Be a full-time Ph.D. or Ed.D. student at an appropriate educational institution; and
- Have access to institutional resources necessary to conduct the proposed research project.
Awards
UI Research Grant for New Scholars is US$1500 each and up to 4 grants. UI Research Grant for Doctoral Students is US$1000 each and up to 4 grants.
